Terms and Conditions

In order to participate in Goat Yoga events, you must agree to the following agreements:

Terms and Conditions

  1. Animal Treatment; Chasing, feeding, mistreating of goats or any other animals included in the Event is forbidden unless otherwise directed by Event Staff.
  2. Disruptive Behavior; The Event Purveyor may, at their sole discretion, remove attendees from the event for alcohol or drug intoxication disruptive of the event, use of profanity, loud or disruptive behavior affecting other attendees, chasing/maltreatment of goats, and verbal or physical abuse of Event Staff.
  3. Cancellations & Missed Events; The Event Purveyor will transfer your reservation to a class on an alternate date in the event of cancellation due to weather, or low/inadequate attendance.
  4. Refunds; No refunds under any circumstances.
  5. Liability Release; The liability release form acknowledged/signed as part of the ticket purchase will be available for in-person signature at the time of the Event. The ticket purchaser and anyone for whom the ticket purchaser made an Event attendance purchase is required to sign the form to gain admittance to the Event.

Guidelines

  1. Please arrive 15-20 minutes before the event so that you can sign in and get a little time to set up your spot in the Event. Please don’t arrive earlier than that, and avoid coming in late as it disrupts the class and the calm the instructor is going to try to create for you and the goats.
  2. Goats love to nibble on jewelry…if you wear anything that dangles or hangs (think earrings or necklaces), you are likely to see it disappear into a goats stomach before you have time to react!
  3. Goats also like zippers, Velcro, and dangling drawstrings, so they will nibble and test those…don’t worry, they are unlikely to damage anything the process as long as you keep the item from their back teeth.
  4. Goats are also great at finding that one exposed toe to step on…we advise that you wear tennis shoes (preferably ones that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty) to protect your feet. Wear flip flops at your own risk!
  5. Don’t chase the goats! As noted above, repeatedly doing this can be grounds for removal from the event (a chased goat is a nervous goat, and a nervous goat means they won’t interact with the class, affecting everyone’s experience).  However, the biggest reason to avoid doing this is that the goat will want nothing to do with you!  Your best bet for getting a goat to love you is to;
    1. Stay calm, talk softly, and don’t make sudden, wild gestures.
    2. Sit on your mat…they are likely to wander over to you.
    3. Avoid scratching them on the head as many goats are head-shy. If a goat wants a head scratch, they will make it obvious!
    4. Do scratch their chest and lower neck. Goats don’t have sweat glands, so their skin tends to be dry and itchy…the chest and lower neck are hard for them to scratch by rubbing on things, so they LOVE when you help them out!
  6. The release form makes it sound as if goats are potentially going to maim, disfigure, kill you! For legal reasons, we cover the most extreme possibilities such as a goat climbing into a vehicle and taking a joy ride.  However, the more likely scenarios you should be aware of include the following:
    1. Bites: As above, goats nibble and test things with their mouths (it is how they got the reputation for eating anything and everything). The same goes for fingers that you might want to let them nibble on…don’t do it!  While the front of their mouth only has lower teeth and won’t do damage beyond an indentation of the skin, their rear teeth are another matter, and they will try to get those fingers back there!  Best bet is to keep your fingers out of their mouth.
    2. Feet: As above, goats have little regard for toes as they walk around…cover those feet!
    3. Head butting: This is a favorite goat pastime.  If you see goats doing it an Event, more likely than not, they are playing.  While it may look like fun to play with them like this, please don’t.  To do so turns you into a plaything in their minds, and while goats have a pretty think skull, you don’t!  Even if you use your hand to ‘head butt’ them, they will take that as a cue
    4. Skin Rash:
      1. Poison Oak/Ivy; Sometimes the goats get into underbrush containing poison oak or ivy despite the diligence of Event Purveyors to eliminate it from their property!…they are impervious to it, but you, not so much. Unfortunately, although this situation is rare, there is no way to guarantee it doesn’t occur.  Should you develop a rash, please let the Event Purveyor know so they can search for any patch of poison oak or ivy that might be the culprit.  For treatment of the rash, we recommend using Tecnu to remove any residual oil (better yet if you have it on hand so you can use it immediately should a rash begin).
      2. Allergies; Goats are hypoallergenic (i.e. unlikely to elicit any allergies). People that are allergic to pet dander tend to have no problems whatsoever with goats.
  • Skin Infections; This too is extremely rare. If you have any open cuts or wounds, we recommend that you cover and wrap them to prevent any debris from contacting the wound.  Should you experience an abrasion or cut at the event, please alert Event Staff immediately so they can administer first aid to clean it and prevent any skin infection.
  1. Brucellosis: There are three forms of this disease, only one of which affects goats and spreads to people (B. melitensis).  The last livestock outbreak of B. melitensis in the U.S. was in Texas in 1999 (though individual cases not affecting entire herds occur every year).  However, the disease is more prevalent in Latin America, southern Europe, the Middle East, central Asia, and Africa.  Even in those countries, the primary modes of infection of people are via contact with infected breast milk (this is the reason ingestion of raw, unpasteurized goats milk/cheese is strongly discouraged), contact with stillborn goat kids, or ingestion of undercooked meat.  Goat Yoga Event Purveyors provide veterinary care to their goats so the condition can be identified and the goats removed from contact with people.  In short, the likelihood of your exposure to B. melitensis is low, and the likelihood of transmission to you is even lower.  Between 1998 and 2011, there were approximately 100 verified cases/year in the US, and those were primarily traced back to unregulated infected food products (from Latin America), or farm workers in close regular contact with an infected animal.  For perspective, the infection rate for Toxoplasmosis, another animal transmitted disease in the US is roughly 69X greater, and those are just the reported/documented cases (primarily from exposure to cats and infected food).  For further perspective, the number of unreported/undocumented Toxoplasmosis cases in the US is estimated as 1.1 million cases per year (roughly 10,000X greater likelihood of infection).  In the end, the risk is low, especially with veterinary care and given the fact that the typical means of exposure are infected food or miscarried goat kids, but the risk is not zero, so practice good hygiene at the event (use hand sanitizer after handling the goats and before eating or drinking).
